Education & History

Dr. Manoel Galvao Neto earned his medical degree in 1989 from the Bahiana School of Medicine in Bahia, Brazil. After completing a residency programme in digestive surgery and endoscopy at the 9th of July Hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil, he returned to Bahia as an assistant professor of surgery at the Bahia School from 1993 to 1998. Also, he was the Experimental Surgery Research Group Coordinator from 1998 to 2000.

Not only this, but Dr. Galvao worked as an instructor for the General Surgery residency programme at Cleriston Andrade Hospital in Feira de Santana, Bahia, Brazil, from 1993 to 2000. From 1999 to 2000, he was an assistant surgeon at So Rafael Hospital in Salvador, Bahia, where he served as a surgical invigilator and was in charge of clinician training for the esophageal manometry service. Dr. Galvao returned to Sao Paulo in 2001 to work at the Diagnoses of America Laboratory as the Coordinator of the Esophageal Motility Service. Simultaneously, he worked as a researcher and consultant, assisting his Brazilian industry partners in the creation of Brazilian hardware and software on pHmetry, esophageal manometry, high-resolution manometry, and pH-impedance, all of which are now country market leaders.

Procedures Performed

Dr. Galvao collaborated with Dr. Josemberg Campos of Recife, Brazil, in developing “Bariatric Endoscopy.” Dr. Galvao has a multitude of firsts in this new pitch. He was the first to use endoluminal approaches to treat bariatric surgery complications in 2000. He was one of the first people to insert an intragastric balloon in 2001. Therefore, the procedures performed by him includes:

  • Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
  • Revision/Conversion of Prior Procedure
  • Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
  • Other Gastric Restriction

Pricing

Dr. Galvao removed the first endoscopic gastric band in South America in 2004 and implanted the very first air-filled intragastric balloon in 2006. Endoscopic treatments and tools for complications such as pneumatic dilation, septotomy, bariatric stents, and bariatric scissors were developed during the “hot years” in the field from 2004 to 2006. Those early years were also notable for the rapid rise in the amount of bariatric endoscopy publications. But he keeps the prices reasonable to cover a wide number of patients.

Reviews

Dr. Galvao’s career work led to thousands of patients he treated or someone he trained benefiting from less invasive alternatives to traditional surgical intervention. Furthermore, it had led to his reputation as one of, if not the, country’s most talented surgical endoscopists. He has served as a course director and faculty member for a variety of medical and surgical societies, including the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), the International Federation for Obesity Surgery (IFSO), the Association of Bariatric Endoscopy, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), and the Brazilian endoscopy and bariatric surgery societies. Hands-on courses were also created for training facilities and universities to offer best services to the patients who have rated him with five star ratings.
